Beartooth Highway – All-American Road (page 2)

back to page 1

As we near Cooke City, we hang a left onto the Chief Joseph Scenic Byway.  Or, as it’s called on GPS maps – Crandall Rd. or Highway 296 to Cody, WY. The cutoff is 17 miles outside of Cooke City. This road has sweeper curves with valley views and is a well maintained road.  As you get closer to Cody, the road goes over the pass and you’ll get switchbacks and wonderful views of the colorful cliffs and green valleys.  Chief Joseph is of Indian legend.  The road follows some of the path of the Chief Joseph band of Nez Perce fought against troops all the way from Oregon where my trip started.  But theirs is a sad story that tragically is still being fought.  This highway is a beautiful reminder of the courage of the Native Americans and the vibrant landscape they lived and loved.

Cody is home to the Buffalo Bill Center for the West. It is of the highest quality with entire sections devoted to Buffalo Bill, Plains Indians, western art, weapons, natural sciences as well as an excellent research facility.  Your ticket allows 2 full days of entry.  You’ll need all of it if you want to see everything.
