Customizing Routes for Mobile Navigator GPS for iPhone

TIPS and TRICKS:  GPS Navigation Trick

Importing custom routes for MobileNavigator for iPhone GPS.  I love using my iPhone as my primary Moto GPS device.  Trying to figure out how to import custom routes from Google maps, Motion X, Streets and Trips, or any other mapping software is a pain in the you know what…  But luckily there are people figuring these things out for us!

Bryan Dolnik shows us how to import map routes with waypoints to Garmin MobileNavigator for iPhone. Works like a charm and makes it EASY to do custom mapping for accurate Moto Tours. Garmin MobileNavigor (Navigon) for iPhone is useful and works even in areas where there is Zero cell coverage.  You’ll need GPS (full view of sky) and an accessory adaptor to keep the battery at full charge.  I’ve written a full review of Navigon MobileNavigator here. I use a multi USB adapter with voltage meter connected on my handlebar via Powerlet adapter and mount the iPhone on my RAM ball mount.

I’ve modified Bryan’s method quite a bit.  See Bryan’s original article here. http://adventuregpx.com/tutorials/route-planning-on-the-iphone/

You can actually start with a google maps route that your plotted on your laptop.  Copy the actual URL with the google map that includes waypoints, etc. and paste that URL directly into ITN Converter.  The app will recognize a URL and ask if you want to import it.  Say yes and Voila!  Your route is already in ITN Converter ready to convert to your trusty GPS unit.  Of course at that point, you’ll modify and tweak to your liking before exporting to your particular GPS unit.  In my case I export to a .target file extension on dropbox.  This is a little confusing, but without worrying about details, this allows the iPhone to upload to the Garmin Navigon for iPhone directly as a custom route with all waypoints included!  Sweet!

Read Bryan’s article and include my tips.  I’ll do a consolidated write up in a future article.

You can modify by specifying each specific POI including gas stations, hotels, food, etc.  You’ll know what your destination is at each stop. routenames

Love it! MotoForever!
