Step 6 – Assemble seat buttons, foam and cover

My seat has buttons to replace.

Use a tool to thread the buttons through the seat cover, both foam layers, and tie off using the original canvas strips. Make sure to match the button heights and don’t leave them too tight or too loose. I’ll get them as close to the original depth as I can and tie with a triple knot so they don’t loosen.

Next, align the seat cover so it is centered on the seat pad and seat pan. Check to see if the rivet holes are still placed properly, or if some or all of the rivets will need to be relocated so the seat cover will be smooth and tight. I choose to relocate about 5 rivets on each side close to the area where I’ve narrowed the seat where my legs will sit. Simply drill the proper hole (for the rivet) where needed. Be careful to avoid drilling into the seat fabric. Then I attach the front three seat cover rivets and temporarily place rivets on the sides to hold the cover long enough to make sure that the cover will be tight and smooth. You can also relocate the rivets as you go as necessary too. I had to drill a couple new holes “on the fly” with no issues. Secure all rivets with an air riveter for a strong hold.

I have buttons on my seat so start there. Making sure that they are all at the same depth.

I have a make shift wire tool to help pull the threads through the seat cover and foam layers.

Thread through the tool with the single side loop

Push the thread through the hole in the seat cover.

And push it right through all of the foam layers.

It doesn’t matter if you pull through the exact same hole. It actually will be easier to tie if the hole is in a slightly new spot. Don’t make it too different because we want the buttons to look straight.

Pull all four of the threads completely through the bottom before tying

The canvas strip holds the thread from sinking back through the hole. Use one strip for two buttons. Mustang connects the right with the right and the two left buttons together.

Make the button depth even, not too loose and not too tight.

I tie three knots to secure the buttons from getting loose
