I’ve used aftermarket seats in the past with mixed results. I decided to select this seat based on the following. Passenger comfort, rider comfort, back support, and value. After much research I was left with two major manufacturers to choose from, Saddlemen and Mustang Seats. There are a couple of other brands that also provide comfort and one in particular that is completely custom. I chose to try the Mustang Seat based on the higher percentage of satisfied owners and return buyers.

The Mustang Regal Touring Seat is slightly higher and sits the rider more forward than my stock seat. Stock, the Harley CVO Road King comes with a 1″ lower solo seat with separate passenger pillion. The 1/2″ forward placement was nice for my 5 foot 8 inch frame and arms, however the higher seat height makes me feel a slightly isolated from the bike and a little disassociated with the bike’s handling. Not an issue for two up riding and long distance, but for every day riding, I prefer to sit ‘in’ in the bike and not ‘on’ the bike. The front is medium width and not exceptionally narrow like many of the aftermarket touring bike seats. You can order a narrow front, but I prefer the regular seat. The passenger pillion is nicely curved and much more comfortable than stock. My wife was comfortable for 1000s of miles without the need for additional padding or accessories. FYI, I also have rear passenger foot boards with Kuryakyn adjustable foot rests which also help avoid cramping and allow the passenger to stretch a bit. The rear portion of the rider seat is nothing short of amazing. The rear curve is slightly higher and more vertical than stock. This has the wonderful side effect of supporting the lower back while retaining rider ability to move around a bit. I was unsure how the additional support would be in actual riding conditions. I was afraid that the seat would make it more difficult to move around and actually make riding long distance less comfortable. Was I wrong!

Impressions from the butt: After riding the first 100 miles, I noticed that I was still comfortable and cool. No fidgeting, no riding on the sides of my butt! I didn’t feel the need to move or change my seating position on the seat at all. At the 200 mile mark, I was thinking to myself… impressive… my butt loves this! At the 400 mile mark, my butt was in love. Really. This seat is the measure that I’ll be ranking all other seats from now on. I thoroughly recommend this seat for anyone that is ok with the ½ inch forward and higher seating position.

Here are the features that I like.

  • Very comfortable
  • Provides lower back support (minimal)
  • Cups the seat for long distance riding
  • Wide passenger pillion comfort
  • Allows stock or aftermarket passenger grab rails
